Causes & Charities for a Courageous December

2020 may be coming to a close (and we’re certainly thankful for that!) but the giving season is still in full swing. December brings countless opportunities to connect with your communities and lean on one another. With the world staying inside this holiday season, there’s no better way to spread cheer than to show your support for everyone still outside, working tirelessly to bring about the kind of change we’re all hoping for.

December Causes & Awareness Holidays

National Cat Lovers’ Month — There’s nothing quite like curling up with the furry/scaly/slimy/feathery friend of your choice. Show your customers your love for the pets in your life and highlight charities like the Stray Cat Alliance, Alley Cat Allies, Best Friends Animal Society, or Lil BUB’s Big Fund. Adore kittens and criminal justice reform? Try Purrfect Pals and their Prison Foster Care Program.

World AIDS Day — To end an epidemic, you need resources on all sides. Take a moment to acknowledge the difficult, unending work put in by volunteers to spread education, advance research, provide housing and security, and bring some light into the lives of those affected. Support their efforts with AIDS United, the Black AIDS Institute, Broadway Cares, Housing Works, and mothers2mothers.

International Day of Persons With Disabilities — Disability advocacy has come a long way, and it still has a long way to go. The disabled population is one of the groups hit hardest by the pandemic. Interested in what you can do? Start by listening to the lovely disabled people in your life and getting a deeper understanding of what needs fixing, legally and culturally. Then stop by one of these great charities and cast your fiscal vote for that fix: AAPD, NAD, TASH, and IDA.

Human Rights Day — Because, as Martin Luther King Jr. said, “No one is free until we are all free.” Check out Amnesty International, Freedom House, Human Rights Watch, and Oxfam-America.

Hanukkah — 8 days of Hanukkah means 8 extra opportunities to celebrate by giving. We’re coming up on 18 charities already, so we’ll keep the streak going and give you a few more to choose from: ACLU, National Immigration Law Center, ADL, and the Jewish Family Services of Greater Orlando or Washtenaw County.

National Ugly Christmas Sweater Day — While you’re sporting your hideous new garment, keep someone else warm with a charity dedicated to homelessness and housing, like the Shoebox Project in the US and Canada, the Second Harvest Food Bank, and Dress for Success.

Christmas — Giving presents is infinitely more fun than getting them, and few things are cuter than making holiday gift magic for kids. Send that spirit out by supporting Toys for Tots, Operation Christmas Child, and the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Kwanzaa — Because it needs more than saying. Support the Black community with true, radical action. Keep using all the lists that have been compiled of Black-owned businesses for your holiday needs. Keep up the voting push that helped elect the first two openly gay, Black members of Congress, Ritchie Torres and Mondaire Jones. Support the Georgia runoff and Rev. Raphael Warnock by buying sweets from the Flip The Senate Bake Sale. Donate to the New Georgia Project, Fair Fight, Black Lives Matter, and the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund.

New Years — We’re heading into 2021 by taking steps every day to make the new year what we want to see. Taking care of the Earth takes care of all of us. Take a long nature walk, watch BBC’s Blue Planet II. Plant a bee-friendly garden with help from the Planet Bee Foundation, or build a bat house with the Save Lucy Campaign. Donate to the Environmental Defense Fund or 350.org.

It’s particularly tough this year to feel in touch. Staying safe means taking precautions to stay separate, which presents some new challenges. It also presents an opportunity to forge that emotional connection with your customers that makes the e-commerce process rewarding on both ends. Aligning with a charity creates a bond with your customers that eases that sense of distance.

The best cure for the holiday blues in getting involved in something bigger than your daily life. Go all-in this season with your charitable giving. From all of us at DailyKarma, we’re grateful to be able to do this work every day with the help of awesome brand partners.
